What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins is also known as Varicosities, it occurs when the vein become enlarged when blood fail to circulate properly. They are more commonly visible in legs as well as thighs but it can develop anywhere in the body. These are common in women but it can occur both in men and women. Basically, it affects women after giving birth and older people. They typically appear to be red or blue color and sometimes they are very painful.
What causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose Vein causes when the veins are not functioning properly. In some cases, the blood circulation in the veins becomes poor because of weak valve. Causes of the condition include:-
- Pregnancy- Pregnancy increases the volume of blood in the body but decreases the flow of blood between legs and pelvic area. The blood circulation in the veins decreases that enlarge the veins and causes Varicose Veins.
- Age – As one grows older one’s veins and other organs of one’s body become weak. Sometimes, blood fails to flow towards one’s heart and starts flowing backwards into the veins causing it to enlarge and become Varicose.
- Genetic problem -, if one member of a family has varicose veins then the possibility of other members to have the same problem increases.
- Obesity – Overweight puts extra pressure to one’s legs and veins too and that causes varicose veins.
- Menopause – Estrogen and progesterone declines at the time of menopause. When these hormones fluctuate, blood begins to pool in the veins and that causes back pressure and leads to varicose veins.
- Sitting or standing for long time in the same place can also cause varicose veins.
What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
- Leg cramps
- Veins looks twisted and bulging
- Swollen knee and ankles
- Veins are highly visible and are red, blue or skin colored
- Pain around the enlarged veins
- Bleeding from Varicose veins
- Itching around the varicose veins
- Muscle pain in legs after standing or sitting.
Treatment for Varicose veins:
Varicose veins can be treated in many ways. But it depends upon the symptoms one haw and the size, color and place of the varicose veins. Treatments include,
- Physiotherapy
- Sclerotherapy, using a liquid injection to block off the larger vein
- Venogram
- Maintain a healthy diet to lose weight
- Leg exercise to improve blood circulation
- Endoscopy vein surgery
- Surgery – If suffering from a lot pain and the condition worsen then surgery is recommended.
- Periodic leg elevation
- Wear splints or braces
- Try avoid sitting and standing for a long time.
