Let us get rid of some common misconceptions. Just because you are being asked to talk to a psychologist or a counsellor, it does not mean that you are “MAD”. That you are weak. Or that you have somehow failed. This is a common reaction that I have often faced over the years.
Why then do you need to talk to a psychologist?
Sometimes we are all overwhelmed with problems that we ourselves find hard to deal with. During these trying times, we often tend to take decisions that we otherwise would not have. We need to be heard during these periods. But, we often feel that no one really has any time to listen, to care, to understand and to support us. We feel terribly lonely or uninvolved with life around us.
Maybe people listen, but do they really hear? People hear, but do they really understand? Have you ever felt so lonely that you thought life is no longer worth living? Has it ever occurred that when you really wanted to share your troubles you kept staring at the phone, not finding the “right” number to dial? Do you try to forget your worries by plunging into work so that others do not understand how terribly lonely you are? There are many more suffering silently like you are. It is neither uncommon nor something to be ashamed of.
It is during these times that a psychologist may be of enormous help. Talking to a psychologist or consulting a psychologist provides you with a space where you can be yourself, without any fear of being judged, or being exposed to criticism by even well-meaning friends or family. Psychologists simply serve to provide you with a holding environment, enclosed by principles of confidentiality and empathy, staying where you can grow, evolve, mature and keep moving through your life’s journey.
Irrespective of gender, age or status, we are all likely to have experienced some low phases in our life, where we have felt lonely or bereft of hope. During these times, a professional psychologist could be an invaluable aid to help you find hope, discover yourself and ask the right questions.
