Suravi experiences recurring instances of back stiffness and pain. Each episode of pain became progressively worse and lasted longer than its previous counterpart and travelled farther from its original source.
9 in 10 people experience shoulder and neck pain at least once in their lifetime, according to recent studies. Most experience shoulder and neck pain, but it is not always isolated to those regions. The pain can also migrate to the arms or head/eyes as well as radiate into the gluts, groin, hip and legs/feet.
It is necessary to put a stop to the cycle and figure out the cause of each episode; accumulation of damage to structures leads to eventual failure of the spinal reticulum. At this stage, physical therapy alone will not be effective. You will need more extensive intervention with spine doctors, pain management, or possibly a surgeon.
If the symptoms were addressed early, 95% of herniated disc patients would NOT require surgery.
Causes of shoulder and neck pain and distress:
- Strains. Broken or dislocated shoulder.
- Poor posture. Awkward sleeping positions. Sleeping on a soft mattress.
- Overuse and wear and tear on shoulder and neck muscles and joints.
- Pinched nerve. Pain from a pinched nerve usually runs down one side of the arm.
- Frozen shoulder. This can result from lack of use due to pain from an injury. At first, pain in shoulders occur with movement. Over time, the pain gets better, but stiffness remains.
- Torn rotator cuff. This is a tear in a ligament that holds the shoulder in place. Symptoms are pain at the top and outer sides of the shoulders, especially when you raise or extend your arm. You may also feel or hear a click when the shoulder is moved.
- Tendinitis. This is swelling of a tendon (tissue that connects a muscle to bone). Left untreated, tendinitis can turn into ‘frozen shoulder’. ‘Wry’ neck is a similar problem.
- Bursitis. This is swelling of the sac (bursa) that surrounds the shoulder joint. Bursitis can be caused by injury, infection, overuse, arthritis, or gout.
- A whiplash injury.
- Osteoarthritis.
- Infections that cause swollen lymph nodes in the neck.
Most of the time the answer lies in effective physiotherapy. Your doctor may refer you to a physical therapist to help you relieve your shoulder and neck pain and restore movement. At TriBeCa, our physiotherapists are highly skilled at the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and neck pain. Since neck pain is not solely about joints or neck muscles, there is a whole gamut of information that our physiotherapist will analyse and correct if needed to resolve your individual problem.
New research has shown that a mix of neck joint and muscle treatment performed by a skilled physiotherapist and some specific strengthening exercises are an effectual way to eliminate neck pain, tautness and headaches. One can also reduce the chances of neck pain returning significantly if the right things are done quickly.
Physical therapy includes both passive and active treatments. Passive treatments help to unwind you and your body. They also prepare your body for curative exercise, which is the dynamic part of physical therapy. Passive treatments provide by our highly skilled physiotherapists at TriBeCa include the following:
- Deep tissue massages that ease chronic muscle tension due to stress
- Hot and cold therapies that induce higher blood circulation in the target area because an increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to that area. Cold therapy slows circulation, helping to reduce inflammation, muscle spasms, and pain.
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS ): A machine stimulates your muscles through variable (but safe) intensities of electrical current. TENS helps reduce muscle spasms, and it may increase your body’s production of endorphins, your natural painkillers.
- Traction: In traction, the therapist will try to stretch and mobilize your spine so that you feel less pain and can move more easily.
- Ultrasound: By increasing blood circulation, an ultrasound helps reduce muscle spasms, cramping, swelling, stiffness, and pain.
In the active part of physical therapy, our therapists will teach you various exercises to work on your flexibility, strength, stability, and range of motion (how easily your joints move). Each and every physical therapy program is individualized, taking into consideration the patient’s health and history. Proper customized physiotherapy solutions are the lasting cure to spinal ailments that TriBeCa willfully provides.
