The eyes are windows to the world. An infant’s introduction to the beauty of a mother’s smile (if we are fortunate) to witness the wonder of a deep blue sky, to witness the pride in your Father’s face, all to be seen to be believed, relished and savoured.
Over time into old age the eyes might dim, might require help (specs) or even become permanently damaged and the spectacle of the world around us become subdued, oftentimes lost.
World –wide cataracts are the leading cause of blindness.
Cataracts are common. People over the age of 40 are prone to this eye defect. Cataracts slowly cloud your vision making for blurred eyesight, it is difficult to read or drive, especially at night. There is increased sensitivity to light and glare.
The causes for Cataracts are varied :-
- Age
- Diabetes
- Eye injury
- Radiation
Prevention is difficult :-
Surgery is the more preferred choice to remove the clouded lens and replace those with a synthetic new one. This is called phacoemulsification. In this, the rapidly vibrating tip of an ultrasound probe emulsifies and helps break-up the cataract which later the surgeon suctions out.
Research is going on how to dissolve cataracts with eye drops, but it is in the initial stages. There are eye drops that can dissolve cataracts.
Ayurvedic system and homeopathy also have claims that they can help if the cataract is in the early stages. BUT this is NOT a certainty .Discretion is advocated.
A helpful guide to protecting the eyes can be offered :-
- Avoid ultraviolet light from the sun with sunglasses
- Avoid using steroid eye drops unless recommended by eye doctor and only if it is very necessary.
- Take a diet rich in nutrients (vitamin A is good)
- Quit smoking and reduce alcohol.
- Checks sugar levels
- Regular eye checkups are a must.
Foods which are good for the eyes :-
- Eggs
- Sweet potatoes
- Carrot and turnip
- Spinach
- Black mustard seeds
- Squash
- Avocado
Besides this the following actions may be considered :-
- Improve lighting at home especially at night.
- Limit night driving
- Wear sunglasses or wide-brimmed hats when out in the sun
- Do have multivitamin tablets containing vitamin E and zinc.
It might be therefore stated that there are no standard systems in place for cataract treatment without surgery. However, the elderly must ensure less strain, more light and good nutrition and doctor‘s visits in time to help themselves to see better.
It is impossible to GET RID of cataracts but it is possible to be more aware and informed to take timely action.
