Diabetes is one of the major health concerns for people today. The effects of low and high blood sugar levels are not only fatal but equally alarming. And this becomes even more of a concern if the patient is affected with Covid.
With the rising cases of covid-19 and black fungus, it is time that we pull up our socks to fight diabetes. Thus, to help patients with uncontrollable diabetes, some latest clinical guidelines shed light on managing the disease.
Guidelines For Managing Diabetes in Covid Patients:
We all know for a fact that Covid-19 is a life-threatening disease, which has consumed several lives till now. Not many of us know but both Covid-19 and Black fungus are a major concern for patients with uncontrollable diabetes. Reason? It is mostly because these patients run the risk of high blood sugar, increasing the risk of Black Fungus.
This is the sole reason why new guidelines have been ruled out for monitoring patients with diabetes. Let us check out what are they:
- Firstly patients shall do a random capillary blood glucose (CBG) checkup at the time of hospital admission.
- Patients shall undertake both pre-meal and post-meal CBG tests after having the first meal at the hospital.
- In the third step, the blood is sent for FPG and HbA1c tests to the lab.
- The patient is then checked for hyperglycemia for the next two days. For this CBG, BBF, BL, BD, and AD tests are done to check if the values are high.
- If any of the above tests meet the glycemic threshold, then Pharmacotherapy is initiated.
Apart from the above, if Hyperglycemia is diagnosed in 24 hours then follow the steps below:
- If blood glucose levels are ≥ 250, then check urine/blood ketone levels. If the result is positive then consult an endocrinologist.
- Start a diabetic diet if CBG≥ 250 mg/dl pre-meal ≥ 140, post-meal ≥ 180, FPG ≥ 110, HbA1c ≥ 6.0.
- If the RBG test result shows ≥ 140 then the patient shall be immediately rushed to the hospital.
How Does Covid-19 Effect The Patients With Diabetes?
It is seen that people with a normal initial glycemic profile have a chance of developing hyperglycemia if diagnosed with Covid-19. Thus, the glycemic assessment must be done twice a day every 3-4 days along with blood glucose monitoring for 2 days.
This applies to patients who are on Oral Antihyperglycemic Drugs as they also have a risk of developing covid-19 symptoms.
The new guidelines for managing diabetic patients stress on repeated monitoring of blood glucose levels. Always remember the key to keeping diabetes in check lies with you. So, do not delay, stick to the points, and follow the diet chart for a healthy and hearty life ahead.
